Party Poker is looking to incorporate some additional excitement to its poker tournaments within the next couple of weeks and have rolled out a campaign called Pokerfest that may fork out a total of $2.4 million in guaranteed tournaments. 

The promotion runs through April 12 and features a multitude of guaranteed poker tournaments that range between buy ins of $5 all the way up as much as $500, to allow for players with all of sizes of bankrolls and budgets to get in on the fun.  There will likely be satellites agreed to all of the 77 events as well, perhaps the smallest buy in ones, to essentially ensure that we're not left out here.

A couple of years ago, I took a vacation and the flight had a 2 hour layover in Las Vegas (what a nice coincidence). I was not going to wait at the airport. I went outside, hopped on the first van and when the driver asked, "Where you going?" I replied, "Your first stop."
The first stop was the Monte Carlo casino. I walked in, found the poker room, and asked for a seat at any table. The seat was a $2-$4 limit hold'em game. I hate $2-$4 limit since everyone in the Bay Area plays no fold'em hold'em.
I took my seat, bought a rack and emotionally the money meant absolutely nothing to me. I was ready to lose the $100 rack.

I read an article by Daniel Negreanu about Nutbar--his name for an exercise to improve your hand reading. In every hand you play, you raise pre-flop and try to outplay your opponents from that point. He warned that the money you were going to play with, would most likely be lost. But the idea was to learn how you could take control of a table, and the importance of reading your opponents in order to bet in a way to win pots.
I bought into a $6-$12 limit game and got a $200 rack. In the first 10 hands I was up about $150, but eventually I went broke .
Daniel was right in learning about Nutbar. But when I left that table, I realized that something else was going on. When I put that money into play, it was lost. I had no emotional connection. I could play better poker because of it. But I believe my game changed once I was winning. Now the chips became money. I actually started to think the money since I was ahead so much in such a little amount of time.
One more example in tournament play:
I see the same thing happen in tournament poker even though the buy-in of $20 or $200 is long gone. At a certain level of blinds, players get hesitant with their chips. It's like they think they can cash in the 10,000 in tournament chips for $10,000. There is an emotional connection to the chips that was not there before. "I'm getting close to cashing, so I better be more careful now." I am at fault as well, in thinking about the payouts as I get close to the bubble. That's why there has been so much written to bubble play.
Your Emotional Connection to Money
My point to all of these examples are this:
1. If you are playing poker and the amount of money you have in play has any consequence to you emotionally, then you should not be in the game. You just won't play at your best.
2. If you are playing in a poker tournament forget about the chips as something you should protect to survive and cash. They are chips and have no value. As you get deeper in the tournament, don't get emotionally involved with potential payour because it will effect your play.
Suggestion
Forget about having any emotional connection to the cash or chips you have in play. You will play better if you think of these things as, well, maybe just things. Heck, chips are suppose to make you forget about the cash backing them in the first place.
Do you think the top pros are linked to their money in the game like you or me? Of course not. I just watched Gus Hansen lose over $200,000 in an online game of Omaha, which maybe took 30 seconds. How would you feel? My guess is that Gus was bummed for a moment. You or I would be sick...a lot more than sick, really.
That $200,000 is going to buy as much stuff in Gus' pocket as it would in yours. But Gus is not linking that money to his emotions in the same way you would. You think and feel different. To Gus, they are just chips to be wagered. To you (and me), it's $200,000 freaking dollars just lost.
While bankroll management is important, maybe you need to think about your emotional connection to the money you put into play. If it has any consequence to you emotionally, then you will not play optimum poker. It doesn't matter that the $20 or $200 has no real meaning to you financially. It is the emotional connection that is underlying your decisions.
There is that expression "don't gamble with money you can't afford to lose." That's fine. But, maybe you shouldn't gamble at a level where your emotions are getting in the way of your poker decisions. You will never be a great player until the money you risk is TOTALLY inconsequential.

Sit N Go tournaments are generally an unscheduled event that will start only when all the available seats for the tables are filled up. Usually they are a three stage knockout tournament played most of the time by 9, 18 or 27 players with the same amount of chips on a single table.

Sit N Go tournaments are a powerful way to make a lot of money playing poker, and very quickly too. However, as I explained before, you will need strong skills in all aspects of Holdem.

How to Play Texas Hold Em - Basic Strategy

Something that people don't always talk about when it comes to poker, but remains an important part of learning basic Texas Hold em strategy, is the selection ofA�starting hands. Most novice players get into way too much trouble because they are way too loose in their starting hand selection. This also pertains to playing No Limit Hold em in the satellite tournaments, which we have been talking about the last few weeks.
If you are just starting out playing Texas Hold em, then by far the best strategy, is to play very tight. I talk about this at length in my book, The No B.S. Guide to Winning Online No Limit Texas Hold em and it is a point that most players tend to forget. Stick to the premium hands unless you are compelled to do otherwise. (by this I mean, if you are in one of the blinds or at a point in a tournament that dictates that you make a move)
As you level of experience increases, you can get more varied and creative in your plays, but for the most part, if you stick to premium hands such as A-K, A-Q, A-A, K-K, Q-Q, J-J, you will keep yourself out of trouble and have a huge advantage over about 80-90% of the rest of the poker population.
Boring? Yes.
Successful strategy? Yes again.
Of course, you are going to play more hand than just these, just because you will make some position plays, get in when you are in the blinds, etc. As I talk about in my ebook, you also may want to try to see flops with small to middle pocket pairs as well. But, many times, if you play your premium hands strong, you will find yourself up against "action junkies" that were in a pot with A-4 or some such crap and you have them dominated with your A-K.
This is particularly relevant in satellites as well. Let the other players play the junk hands and bust out early. Remember, you don't have to finish first in most satellites to make the money. Don't get caught playing crap hands. Leave that to the other players, play your strong hands strong, and you will find yourself getting paid in satellites more often than not.

Poker Tells in Texas Hold'em Poker - Part 1 of 4

Tells are subconscious actions by a player that may give an observant person an insight into that player's hand. Mastering the psychology of poker is crucial to winning poker, and reading tells is one of the skills you need. When you first sit at a table, or, even better, as you are watching a table to decide if it is where you want to play, pay attention to the players. This gives you time to notice tells, since it is easier to observe player actions when you are not in a hand. This is one of the reasons that, when you first sit at a table, you choose a seat where you will be waiting for the blind to come to you, rather than paying to start playing immediately.
The importance of player tells cannot be understated, both your opponents' and your own. Mike "The Mad Genius of Poker" Caro and many others have made a living espousing the importance of player's tells for more than two decades. His most commonly quoted tell is "Weak is strong and strong is weak." In simple terms, if opponents, through their words or deeds, act as if they have a strong hand, they very often have a weak hand and vice versa. Since it is such a well known tell, many people try to reverse it, so beware of this tell when it is out of character for the opponent. Phil "The Poker Brat" Hellmuth, winner of ten WSOP bracelets, says that figuring out just two tells a tournament can make the difference between cashing out and busting out.
You need to know what many of the common tells represent and then attempt to see them in the players around the table. Check each of the other players' mannerisms to spot any obvious tells that may give you an advantage later. Another important aspect of knowing about tells is insuring that you yourself are not providing tells to your opponents. You can either stifle obvious tells, or more effectively, do the opposite. The best defense is to mix it up and, from time to time, "make strong mean strong." Though tells can be important information and a needed weapon in our poker arsenal, it is equally important to realize that tells are only one small part of the entire story and should never be taken in isolation or as an absolute truth.
It is just as important to not provide betting tells to your opponents. You do this in one of two ways. One way is to keep your bets the same size whether you are holding King-King or 5-7 offsuit. Also, take the same amount of time to bet the monster hand as you do when you fold. The other way is constantly changing the size of your bet. By making the bets different sizes for the same cards, you portray a confusing pattern to opponents. By being inconsistent, you do not allow your opponents to get a read on your style. Remember that the less information you provide your opponents through your own betting patterns, the better.

No Limit Hold Em Poker Strategy Spotting the Monster Hand

Here is a Q&A from a poker student that I was working a few weeks ago and I thought showed some good thoughts and was worth talking about in more depth.
His question was:
"One hand worth mentioning, I had Ah 9h, the flop came 10h  6h  Jc, I was on the button and put it a pot size bet of $60, three players folded and the guy to my right, called, the turn card was 7h, after sitting out many hands I finally picked up a nut flush. I made a 3x the pot size bet, the player on my right, raised. So I am looking at the board and I see my three hearts I needed for the nut flush and I re raised him and he re raised me so I call thinking Ok, he is going to lose a bunch of chips. The river card is elementary,  2d. So I just check to him to see what he's going to do and he puts in all his chips, about $120 so I call. Whamm! He turns over 8h 9h. I don't know if I had studied the board a little harder I might have seen it coming but there was no way I was going to drop the nut flush. Again, I saw the hearts but I was negligent to look at the ranking of the card and if I had have, I probably would not have put him on a straight flush."
There is just not much you can do about that. If you have the nut flush and someone happens to hit a straight flush, then that is just poker and you move on. The amount of times your nut flush will win compared to the straight flush hitting is enormous, so you just have to take the good with the bad and not get frustrated. The worst thing you can do is get paranoid and start thinking that your monster hands will always be beaten by another monster. Sometimes you just get unlucky, but you have to play your strong hands strong or you are in trouble.
In a big multi-table Full Tilt tournament last night, I saw another player at my table hit a set of T's on the flop. He was in a hand against a player who had been incredibly loose, got all his chips in and the other guy had flopped a set of Ace's (the flop was A-T-5) There is just not anything you can do about that. 9 times out of 10 that set of T's will be up against A-K or A-Q or something else that a player is willing to bet to the River with and he would have put him all out. This time it cost the guy with the T's. That is the way it goes, but the only way you are going to make money, is by making it off your premium hands.
In 2008 WSOP Daniel Negrenau busted out when his set that he hit on the Flop ran up against another, higher, set. Bad luck and bad timing, you then is no way you can fold your big hand in that situation.

Heads Up Play in Texas Hold'em Poker

Once you get to heads-up play, the game of Hold'em changes. In limit Hold'em, you can make a few big mistakes-sometimes it works in your favor if you appear too loose-but you cannot afford to make very many small ones. Constant small misreads of your opponent are far more likely to end your tournament than an incorrect size bet.
When playing heads-up, the most important factor is to understand your opponent's style. Since you have been playing against them for at least the time together on the final table, you should have a good read on their ability, image and level of play. If they are more skillful than you are, you can negate their advantage by forcing big pots to end the game as quickly as possible. If you are the superior player, take your time by playing smaller pots. Your skill level should win out in the end.
Heads-up essentially comes down to a psychological war of aggression. You should raise aggressively with any hand you play and, more often than not, follow it to the river if you have any part of the board, trying to get in every extra bet possible when you believe you are in front.
In order to win the tournament outright, you must know how to adjust your game. When it is down to just two players, there is no one else to hide behind, since you are paying blinds every hand. If you wait for great starting hands, your stack is going to end up blinded away. It often comes down to AC (any card, not Atlantic City) poker. The chances are that you will see the flop with nearly any hand. The end stages of some tournaments will see the blinds equaling the size of the chip stacks. The exceptions to seeing the flop are a sizable raise from your opponent or an extremely poor starting hand. It sometimes comes down to going all-in blind on every hand and hoping your cards win. This style of play twice made Doyle Brunson a WSOP Main Event winner with 10-2 off suit.
The other defining element to heads-up play is position, which is just as important as the break in pool. Limit heads-up is slightly different than no-limit heads-up, since position plays a lesser-though still important-role in limit. The button traditionally posts the small blind, therefore acting first before the flop, and acting second after the flop. This player has both the opportunity to take the lead in a pot pre-flop and to put pressure on the big blind post-flop.
To control the game heads-up, you want to do the majority of your attacking when you are on the button, and the majority of your defensive poker when you are off it. The comparative size of the blinds to your chip stack plays an important part in your decisions. With huge blinds, you stand a greater chance of risking your entire chip stack in either position. Remember, the button's main advantage is that there are three rounds of betting after the flop, giving you the opportunity to fire chips at your opponent three times, essentially putting most of their stack on the line, even in a limit game.
Though this strategy is the first step to success in heads-up play, a lot depends on your opponent. If you follow the formula of constantly attacking from the button and defending off it, you should quickly find out how your opponent's game contrasts with yours. If you find them using the same strategy, the chances are that you will end up in a long battle of attrition. In this case, with neither of you giving in, the blinds eventually become so huge that winning or losing the tournament comes down to a few big pots.

Advanced Betting Techniques in Texas Hold'em Poker - The Slow Play - Part 1 of 3

Winning poker comes down to being able to squeeze a profit out of marginal situations. The object is not to win every hand played, but to win every hand you play. The best way to do this is to out bet your opponents. Every bet made should have a purpose. Either it is made to induce a weaker hand to fold, or it is made to maximize the winnings on the hand.
Since there are many opportunities to outplay your opponents, you have to know which opponents you can outplay. It is difficult to finesse weak players. The slow play often backfires because one of the loose limpers will hit a hand. The bluff does not work, since these players call with any two cards. The following sections demonstrate many of the advanced aspects of the game and how best to play them.
The Art of the Slow-play
The slow-play is when you intentionally under-bet in order to disguise the strength of your hand and attempt to trap an opponent with a weaker hand. Unlike the bluff, the slow-play is effective against both strong and weak opponents. Bad opponents simply bet their hand, so if they have something or they are simply on a draw, they are going to pay you off.
You should not slow-play when there is a flush or straight draw on the board. You should only slow-play when your opponent has a poker hand that is not likely to improve enough to beat yours. Suppose the flop is AD-7H-KC and you hold 7D-7C, and you put your opponent on an Ace or King. It is usually more profitable to bet the hand aggressively on the turn. This way you can get at least one extra large bet by letting your opponent make the initial raise for you.
The flop is the primary round to use the slow-play. On subsequent betting rounds, your opponents give you action for one of two reasons. Either they improved their hand on the next street and their hand is now worth betting, or they think their mediocre hand is good because you did not show strength the previous round.
If you slow-play the turn, you are sacrificing an opportunity to make money on the turn. The only reason to slow-play here is if your read on your opponents is that they will fold with any bet you make. If this is the case, then it may be worth checking to see if you can get a bet from them on the river, since winning a pot with one round of betting in it is better than winning one with no money in the pot.
Some players want to slow-play a monster hand on the turn so they can make the big raise on the river. This is another example of trying to be too complex in betting. Because of their desire to raise on the river, they slow-play the turn and forgo an opportunity to make good money from several opponents. On the river, these plays usually end up isolating a single remaining opponent, who may or may not call a raise.
While another player is thinking of the big river raise, you should concentrate on building the pot at every opportunity when you have the premium hand. Do not attempt fancy slow-plays. They often cost you money from missed betting opportunities or from your opponent hitting a hand on the turn or river.
When Not to Slow-Play
If you should hit quads or a full house, do not over play the hand. If your opponents are playing out of position, they frequently do not bet the turn or river, instead they check or call. If you slow-play the turn, this type of opponent does not start throwing in raises and re-raises on the river. Therefore, just keep betting the turn, despite the improvement. They rarely put you on quads, so try to get some action on the turn. Do not stop playing your style of play and slow-play when you have a great hand. That becomes an easy tell to spot and makes your play predictable.
Remember that the act of betting does not automatically give your hand away. This is especially true if you have been constantly changing gears and mixing up your table image throughout the gaming session. Also, never overlook the fact that another player with an inferior hand may slow-play the flop with the intent to open up on the turn. Letting them do so allows you to hide the strength of your hand when they do raise or re-raise. As with the bluff, the slow play is not as useful in limit poker as it is in no-limit. With only a small bet, most players that are going to stay in the hand will do so for at least one additional bet.
Representing Your Hand
A strong bet can represent a strong hand. This is especially true when betting after the flop. If an Ace or King shows on the flop, you can represent an Ace or King in your hand by betting. Often, it is what you represent that is more important than what you actually have, especially if you have put your opponent on a medium or weak hand.
